Teaching Philosophy & Methodology

I have found that to be the most effective teacher, students also need to hear music regularly demonstrated on a high level.

Due to the enormous subtlety and numerous variables involved in playing a musical instrument, it is essential that students have an opportunity to hear and watch a great player up close as an instructive learning tool.

I have maintained a private teaching studio for over 25 years and enjoy teaching kids of all ages and ability levels. I primarily teach with the Suzuki method in mind, but I also incorporate aspects from my own philosophy and performing/teaching experience. Learning is natural to the human spirit. From birth, we see children copying those around them. They learn to walk and speak by imitating. Learning an instrument comes easily the same way. A child’s desire and ability to learn to play music is fueled by watching, listening, and emulating.

If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline, and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.
— Shinichi Suzuki

My belief in the human spirit to naturally want to improve and excel reflects in my style of teaching- enthusiastic, supportive, and nurturing. At the same time, I am organized and have high expectations to guide a student’s growth. I am a positive and optimistic person and an encouraging teacher.

My extensive success with working with violin students of all ages has proven this to be the best way to instill and retain a love of music while still supporting a student’s development. As with any good teacher, there must also be external pressure applied from a teacher to a student. They encourage the student to push themselves beyond their own perceived limits and set realistic and attainable goals.

Meredith is the perfect blend of talented performer and patient teacher. She has all of the technical knowledge a student needs to succeed, plus she strives to create performance opportunities, whether those are in group classes, small recitals, at local events, and more. We felt very fortunate to be part of her studio and my daughter improved by leaps and bounds.
